1962 The World United Against Malaria

1962 anti-malaria campaign

In 1962, the World Health Organization (WHO) led a global philatelic campaign to raise awareness and funds for the eradication of malaria. The campaign included the issue of postage stamps, special postal cancellations, and other philatelic materials.

101 countries and territories issued stamps with the theme “The World United Against Malaria,” with the proceeds from the sales of donated materials went to the WHO Malaria Eradication Special Account (MESA). The campaign aimed to raise awareness and funds for the global eradication of malaria, a disease that had hindered the economic and social development of many regions. The campaign was successful in generating international commitment to the goal of malaria eradication. However, the Global Malaria Eradication Programme (GMEP) ultimately failed to eradicate malaria globally.

This collection became expanded when I found a August 30, 1963 report from the WHO, “Postage Stamps Portray a World United Against Malaria” by Donald R. Johnson, and Roy F. Fritz, and now includes malaria-related stamps prior to 1962.
