The Vienna Derby (Österreichisches Galopper-Derby) was held at the Galopprennbahn Freudenau in Vienna from its inception in 1868 until 2003. The inaugural race took place on May 23, 1868, at the Freudenau racecourse, which had been established in 1839. This venue remained the traditional home of the Derby for 135 years, hosting the event annually and attracting significant attention from the racing community.
During 1940 to 1944, the Vienna Derby was officially renamed Großer Preis von Wien due to the political climate of the time. This change was part of broader efforts to align sporting events with the prevailing regime’s preferences. After 1944, the race reverted to its original name, the Vienna Derby.
Following World War II, the Freudenau racetrack was restored with the assistance of the British occupying forces, allowing horse racing to resume. The Austria-Preis was the first major post-war race, held on October 20, 1946, and is regarded as the de facto Vienna Derby of that year.
