Befreiungskrieg (War of Liberty) was the German rising against Napoleon in 1813, in which Prussia, supported by Russia and later other Allies, mobilized its reformed army and citizen volunteers to drive French forces from German lands. It marked the awakening of German national consciousness and laid the foundations for the eventual defeat of Napoleon and the reshaping of Central Europe.
