
The United Kingdom’s Christmas Island Act was given royal assent on 14 May 1958 by Queen Elizabeth II, enabling Britain to transfer authority over Christmas Island to Australia from Singapore. Australia’s Christmas Island Act was passed in September 1958, and the island was officially placed under the authority of the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 October 1958.
These are the first issues, featuring a 1955 Australia design with “CHRISTMAS ISLAND” and value added in black typography, designed by George Lissenden, and printed by the Note Printing Branch, Commonwealth Bank, Melbourne. Issued 15 October 1958.
