The 2022 Commonwealth Games, officially the XXII Commonwealth Games, were held in Birmingham, England, from 28 July to 8 August 2022. Birmingham became the third English city to host the Games, following London in 1934 and Manchester in 2002. The event brought together 4,822 athletes from 72 Commonwealth nations and territories, competing across 19 sports.
Birmingham 2022 was particularly notable for its emphasis on inclusion and gender equality. It staged the largest integrated para-sport program in Commonwealth Games history, with 44 medal events across eight para sports. It was also the first major international multi-sport event to offer more medal events for women than men. Women’s T20 cricket made its Commonwealth Games debut, alongside 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball.
Competition was held at 15 venues across Birmingham, the West Midlands and London, with the refurbished Alexander Stadium serving as the principal athletics venue and hosting the opening and closing ceremonies. More than 1.5 million spectators attended.
Australia topped the medal table, winning 67 gold, 57 silver and 54 bronze medals. Host nation England finished second with 57 golds and a record 176 medals overall. Across the Games, athletes established 4 world records and 96 Commonwealth Games records.
