Marquis of Pombal Tax & Postal Tax Dues, issued 8 May 1925
Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquis of Pombal, 1st Count of Oeiras (13 May 1699–8 May 1782), statesman, rebuilt Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755. Tax was for the erection of the Pombal monument. Obligatory on all mail on certain days throughout the year. When the compulsory tax was not paid by the use of the Postal Tax stamps, double the amount was collected by means of the Postal Tax Dues, inscribed MULTA.
