The San Marino Volunteers Monument, the Ara dei Volontari (Altar of the Volunteers), is a major memorial in the Republic of San Marino honoring citizens who died while volunteering in wars tied to Italian and European history. Designed by engineer Gino Zani (1883–1964), it includes a votive chapel, a double staircase, an altar, and an obelisk. The monument commemorates volunteers who fell in conflicts linked to Italian unification and subsequent wars (1845–1918), and later those who died in the liberation struggle of WWII (1943–1945).
Inaugurated in 1927, it bears plaques listing the names of 138 fallen volunteers, with later additions recognizing World War II casualties. The site remains central to national remembrance, serving as a focal point for military parades and civic ceremonies, including wreath-laying events such as the Arengo Anniversary and Militia Day. Located near other monuments, including one dedicated to WWII bombing victims, it highlights San Marino’s longstanding neutrality while acknowledging its citizens’ participation in wider European conflicts.
Issued 28 September 1927.
