The Pan-American Union is the former name of the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS). Founded in 1890 (1889–90) as the Commercial Bureau of the American Republics, the name changed to the International Bureau of the American Republics in 1902. The name ‘Pan-American Union’ was adopted in 1910. Members in 1940 were Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua. Panama, Paraguay, Peru, United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
