The Free Territory of Trieste (1947–1954) was a proposed independent state created by the 1947 Peace Treaty with Italy to resolve competing claims by Italy and Yugoslavia after World War II. It was meant to be governed by a UN-appointed governor, but Cold War disagreements prevented this from happening. Instead, the region remained divided into Zone A, administered by an Anglo-American Allied Military Government, and Zone B, administered by Yugoslavia. The arrangement lasted until the 1954 London Memorandum, which gave Trieste and Zone A to Italy and Zone B to Yugoslavia. The border was formally confirmed by the Treaty of Osimo in 1975.

The stamps are Italian issues overprinted “AMG-FTT” (Allied Military Government – Free Territory of Trieste). The definitive “Coin of Syracuse” dominated Italian stamps for three decades. The “Siracusana” series were  also known as “Italia Turrita” (“Italy decorated with tower”, since the female profile is identified with a personification of Italy).
