The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) / Organisation du traité de l’Atlantique nord (OTAN) was established by the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty on 4 April 1949 by Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Greece and Turkey joined in 1952.
