In the medieval era, the Hungarians had to build huge castles to protect themselves from the empires of the Carpathian basin. In 1960 and 1961, the Hungarian People’s Republic (now Hungary), issued sets of definitive stamps featuring many of these castles. Several of the 1960 issues were also issued on colored paper, and in common with Hungarian practice, all stamps were issued perforate and imperforate. Designed by Füle Mihály (1914–2005), the stamps were printed by the State Printing Works (now ANY Biztonsági Nyomda Nyrt) in Budapest.
