1961 Europa

1961 Europa

Cyprus and San Marino had their first issues. Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway and Sweden did not issue this year. The common design is a stylized dove made up of 19 individual doves (representing the 19 CEPT members) by Dutch artist Theo Kurpershoek (1914–1998). Three countries did not use the common design: Liechtenstein (cogwheels), Portugal (four intertwined hands), and San Marino (a view of the Mount Titano). Several of the United Kingdom islands issued unofficial stamps, as well as a set by Paraguay, all cashing in on the Europa stamp craze.
