- The Winged Ox symbolizes St. Luke the Evangelist, and is from an 8th century design in the Gospel Book in Lichfield Cathedral
- The Eagle symbolizes St. John the Evangelist and is taken from an 8th century Irish manuscript now in the library of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge
