1970 Dickens & Wordsworth

1970 Dickens Wordsworth

In 1970, Great Britain’s Royal Mail released the Literary Anniversaries commemorative set, honoring the centenary of Charles Dickens’s death (1812–1870) and the bicentenary of William Wordsworth’s birth (1770–1850). This quintet featured four 5d stamps showcasing iconic Dickensian characters alongside a single 1/6 stamp celebrating Wordsworth’s connection to nature. Designed by Rosalind Dease (1928–1997), the block of four Dickens stamps beautifully adapted vintage illustration styles to depict classic fictional pairings. Meanwhile, the landscape orientation of the Wordsworth stamp perfectly captured the scenic Lake District, providing a profound, holistic tribute to Britain’s unparalleled literary heritage.
