The West African Games (Jeux d’Afrique de l’Ouest) was an international multi-sport event between the nations of West Africa, held in Lagos, Nigeria from 27 August to 3 September 1977. Ten countries contested eleven sports. The competition was also called the ECOWAS Games since all participating nations were from the Economic Community of West African States, founded in Lagos two years earlier, and organized by the ECOWAS Games Council. A second edition to be held in 1979 in Cotonou, Benin, was announced but did not happen. Also referred to as the second West African Games after a previous event in 1960: see https://dicksstamps.online/collections/1960-1963-african-friendship-games/.
