2008–2013 France Marianne et l’Europe

Marianne et l'Europe

The Marianne et l’Europe was France’s definitive stamp series from 2008 to 2013, replacing the Marianne des Français and remaining in everyday postal use until succeeded by the Marianne de la Jeunesse. Designed and engraved by Yves Beaujard (1939–2024), it was chosen by President Nicolas Sarkozy to mark the milestone of France’s presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The design depicts Marianne in left profile, wearing the Phrygian cap, her head framed by a crescent of stars that replace the traditional tricolor cockade as a bold symbol of a unified Europe. Reflecting Beaujard’s classical background, the portrait returned to a highly detailed, academic engraving style that emphasized traditional line work over the minimalist aesthetic of its predecessor. It also made history as the first French definitive series to be fully available in self-adhesive formats, altering everyday mailing habits.

Printed in intaglio (taille-douce) by Philaposte, the series adapted to the changing postal landscape with various letter-rate denominations, including the prominent green Lettre verte. Widely admired for its rich execution, the Marianne et l’Europe remains a landmark issue celebrating modern French identity within the continental community.
