The Joy of Acquiring a Missing Stamp, Part I

When I am creating a collection, I do a lot of research online and consult my elderly spotty collection of Scott catalogs to find all the issues for that collection globally. Occasionally, I can’t find anyone selling a particular stamp, even though it does not have a high catalog value. It’s just unobtanium. But then, every so often, I check for these missing stamps, and sometime I find them! This is an extremely satisfying moment, only topped when the stamp arrives from the seller and I add it to the collection. This is the case with this stamp, a 5 guaraní stamp from Paraguay, issued on 9 June 1986 to commemorate the Pan American Games to be held in Indianapolis the following year. It is a stamp originally issued on 16 January 1985 to commemorate the gold medal won by Mary Lou Retton for individual all round gymnastics, and reissued with a silver overprint for the Pan American Games. I got this stamp from a dealer in Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina.
